View Full Version : I miss the old Venice sound!

Hi there
I hope that after this message I won't be stalked by Venice groupies..haha
Today I bought the new album, and...well...ehhh... to be honest......I miss the old Venice sound!
Off course I like the songs, but what I like the most about Venice is that feeling you get like those melodies directly touch your soul. For instance like "Long Fall", "For a dancer", "comes it now", "one quiet day". That's why the only songs that really touched me are..."language of the heart" and "Most of us", beautiful lyrics and melodies!.
I know that I still want to hear them live and that I'll love these new songs sooner or later! But for me there are less venice vibes !
By the way, when I heard Blue paint, the bass groove immediately reminded me of "Overload" by Sugar babes. Anyone had the same?

I too hope nobody stalks you. :)
My only advice is to give the new album some time. I often will play a new album many times and then make a judgement. Often the songs I initially liked I end up finding too simple, and the ones I didn't like, become my favorite.

I don't agree with you. I think this is definately Venice, only more refreshing. What about Precious Stone, that has a Venice sound I think and I'm not myself. Only there is more instrumental stuff on it and that makes it more moving. I can't keep sit still when I'm hearing the CD. I'm jumping all over the place and I can't stop with it hihihi.

Hi Ellen, Randy
I know what you mean, off course it's venice, and yes I can't sit still either..but because of the more instrumental stuff, I wasn't overwhelmed like I was while listening to "2 meter sessies" , "garage demos 1&2" and "born & raised". For me just those four Lennon voices (!!!!), guitars and some percussion would do just fine. (Little less drums and more close harmony). But like I said earlier I think I start to love all of the songs eventually, just need some more time...(and some concerts, haha)

Hi Marjorie,
I don't know if you have heard the news songs at a Venice concert already, but if not, go in October and you will see they did not loosed the typical Venice sound at all, also not with the new songs. I also love acoustic shows more, but when you will hear these songs live, than you don't have doubts anymore.

Hi
Iīm listening to the Do it Yourself EP (or whatever they call those things) and the first album "Venice" and they sounds very much like WttRoyL. So this new album IS the old Venice sound.

Marjorie,
Sorry to dissapoint you.
As I said in 'Baby's Calling' categorie, I gotta stop reading anything negative about the new record. It starts to bum my high.
Overall, the new album seems to be appreciated and "Welcomed" by most so I think I'll give it another year before I give it up.
Also, when you said,
"That's why the only songs that really touched me are..."language of the heart" and "Most of us", beautiful lyrics and melodies!."
That is a little puzzling to me.
Anyway, hope you give us another chance before you throw it out!rotfl
Giving it up Michael? You're kidding, right?
99,9% of us fans think WTTROYL is a fabulous CD! So, do us a favour: keep on going!

WTTROYL is my most favourite Venice album till now! To me it's a combination of all previous releases. It's got something of that 'heavy' sound of the S/T, combined with the acoustic sound of B&R and the 'let's add some new sounds' of SA. And I'm sure more people are thinking it's a great album! So Mike, don't give up yet ;)

Hi Michael
I'm sorry. I did not mean to offend you. I realize it's not nice to read such messages after all the hard work you've had making this album and coming this far.
But it's just one opinion, don't let that get in your way.
It's hard for me to express myself in English but I'll try to explain what I mean.
What I love and admire about Venice is the four of you chosing a melody, and combine those. It's so powerfull and honest, I'll have to stop whatever I'm doing (sometimes even breathing...) and just feel it...I don't need more.
That's why I love songs like "Language of the heart" or "Baby's calling" so much.
"Most of us" I like because of the groove and lyrics. It's so true. The shalowness of today's world sometimes frightens me, gladly I'm not the only one who thinks that.
Hey, maybe I'm just a bit slow and need some more time to fully understand the album. One thing's for sure I'll NEVER throw away anything. I'll treasure this album as much as all the others.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Though as a precautionary measure, if I dare to attend the meet and greet in october, I'll say my name is Betty, just in case you want to throw me out..
Don't give up, you're to good!
Bye-for now-Marjo....ehhh...Betty Betty!

Of course I'm kidding. We will never please everybody all of the time. All we can do is follow our vision and hope it connects with enough people to allow us to continue making music and touring.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Michael, but you're doing better than ever, aren't you?
And if your high is fading, don't worry. Just wait till the tour, and you'll be on a high again when you see and hear us sing our brains out at the concerts. And if that doesn't work, you can always remember the names of your critics and recognize them at the shows by their VeniceTalk-button.......:eyebrow:

I think the old Venice sound is still present on WTTROYL, but just wrapped in a new 'jacket'. You guys have done a hell of a job with this new album. And indeed there are some songs that are not like all of the other songs you wrote before. But you just don't have to copy your old work all the time (not that you did, though). With WTTROYL you renewed your style a bit (in my opinion) and that's just what you guys needed!! Look at all the succes you already have with this new album!! My sincere compliments to all four of you and all who worked very hard on this album.

That's what I like so much about Venice (and all the other bands I'm such a huge fan of): Every album sounds different, but still there is that familiar sound. Wouldn't be right to make a new album and let it sound just like the others, 'cause that would be a waste of time and money. I for one don't need for example a S/T part two, 'cause when I want to hear that I can put on S/T. But it's very nice to hear some S/T influences on the new album. Okay, hope I was able to tell my opinion about this in understandable English ;)

For years everyone has tried to pigeon hole Venice into a certain categorie. Some say it is like the Eagles , or Crosby, Stills, and Nash, the Beach Boys, etc. etc. Well I'm here to say right now as a long----long time Venice fan that this new album does away with the stereotypes and shows that Venice has It's own sound. There is a bit of everything Venice has done over the years on the new album. The great musical influences are there in the music but i'ts all Venice .There are songs on the album that take me back to the "Do it yourself" e.p. and every other project since is on this new album. That is why I love Venice's music so much because it is so diverse and fresh. Unfortunatly that ,I think, has hurt Venice here in America because we don't apreciate a band that can rock you with one song and them make you cry with another and make you sing and dance and cry again and then rock you !! If we go to a concert in the U.S. we go to see a metal act , we want a metal opening act. a jazz show with all jazz no pop or hip hop mixed in. I think in europe people are more open to seeing a mixture of musical styles together and they appreciate each style. Our radio stations do the same thing here in L. A. they don't mix up musical formats the stations that have tried always end up folding. The "Venice sound" could be put on a pop rock station, country station, easy listening, rock, on and on it could go. Their sound is the" VENICE SOUND" from now on in my book and WTTROYL IS THE BEST VENICE ALBUM SO FAR AND SHOULD WIN THE GRAMMY

I convinced Freez FM to put Venice on their playlist and they're playing "Think Again" for several weeks now! Freez is a rockstation on which they play pop/rock/metal songs from 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s and also a lot of new releases. Very diverse, with names like Beatles and Eagles, but also names like Pearl Jam and Metallica. And in between all those hundreds of names there's that band from Venice who's also played frequently! ;)

I don't care what anyone says: I think this is the best album so far... and I have all of them by now... I love the "funky" sound (compared to the former albums), this CD is still being played every day in my car, and it makes me very very very very cheerful. I agree it sound a little different compared to the other ones, but I think it is an absolutely BRILLIANT SUPERB EXCELLENT CD!!!!!!

So, Venice, keep up the spirit and good work... waiting for your new album...... :D :D

Hi Folks.... Here's my first mail in here.... and hopefully not my last.
About the album; I think (personal opinion) it is more of a commercial CD than the others have been. The sad thing is though that the ballads (like Rivers never Run, or Starting here Again, When I Get Over You...etc etc) are missing somehow. Pat has made a great contribution with Language of the Heart though, but still I miss the slow ones that can create that intimate kind of athmosphere, the vibes earlier posts referred to. Still I think a heck of an achievement, but I do hope that beside the CD-single stuff, the commercial tracks, the next album will hold some layed back material.

Hi Marjorie! NOW I understand what you talked about at the hotel in Hardenberg! :D But don't worry girl! Sometimes you need to shock the regulars a bit..:D ;)
I have to agree with TwoSocks here. I too miss the more layed back songs on WTTROYL and I hope there will be more on the new album. But I also think that "Language of the Heart" and "Father Time" has made such a big impression and impact (like "Family Tree" and "Landslide" for example), that the missing-feeling is softened once you get to know the album.
So bye Folks....this was not my first post...and not my last either...:p

Hi Jolanda!
It was nice meeting you in cold and far-away-from-home Hardenberg!
As you perhaps noticed, itīs been a while since I started this thread. Though I still like Garage Demos more then the new album, but..as cdīs!!!
I know, now Iīve heard the new songs several times live, there really isnīt any difference between the Venice songs (when you speak of quality).
For me I experience the "Venice energy" more while listening to Garage Demos. Thatīs because its like their standing right in front of you, like at a concert. Because of the perfect "recording quality" of WTTROYL I miss that feeling.
Another example (which hopefully clearlify things) is that I love to hear and feel Pat getting more and more comfortable singing his song Language of the heart. Such things stand out, because you
can feel the energy and effort an artist has to put in his work.
But thatīs just me (someone who loves to listen to old Ella Fitzgerald recordings where you can hear the needle scrape the LP, or songs recorded at some small Jazz club)
Bye for now-Marjorie (a.k.a. Betty)

In my opionion Venice wanted with WTTOYL go other ways, I mean they wanted to be part of the music-business (as they said at the 2metersessies in 1999). That`s okay, because I think the time for the 70ies sound is not right.
Sorry for me, but I love the sound and the songs/lyrics on BornAndRaised - this is my favourite cd of all time. For me it is more better than my favourite Jackson-Browne-cds"I`m Alive" or "Hold Out" or "The Pretender".
But I like WTTROYL really - they are wonderful songs and heartbreaking (what I think....) true lyrics on this album.
So I`m hoping and wishing for the guys that this album and the Edison-nomination will be their breakthrough here in Europe. They have so long doing wonderful music and they are the ones who have the right to make a great career. :)
Regards form here
