The most important things of: Kipp Lennon (Venice)
Aloha magazine, people and music, May (?) 2005
When it’s about books and movies it’s all about family, and his meeting the Beatles put him on the right track musically.
Most important movie: Avalon – Barry Levinson (1990)
“Avalon is one of the most moving movies I have ever seen. It is a bittersweet story of a family migrating to America. They arrive at Ellis Island, and settle down in a big town on the East Coast. You follow these people during the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and beyond. The first televisionset, the changing of the music, all those kind of things. Every generation has its turn. At the end of it all, the old father is living in a retirementhome and his great-grandson is coming over for a visit. The movie is overflowing with melancholy, because Levinson is capable to capture the innoncence of the first half of the 20th century. Not that this was a perfect time, black people and women hardly had any rights to speak of, but the movie Avalon shows the way of life and the bond that a family of immigrants share, in a wonderfull way. The values you just don’t see anymore were still present there. This touches me so deeply because I myself originate from a large and close knitted family, which deeply remembers and cherishes the previous generations, and regards those of them who are no longer among us with a deep respect.
Besides that, Levinson has a great abbility to keep it real in all his movies. And when I am watching a movie, I want to feel like I am watching something “real”, whether it is Avalon, a war movie, a sci-fi movie or a comedy.”
Most important record: Ed Sullivan Show: The Beatles (1964)
“Even more than a record, a musical event has changed my life: The Beatles preforming at the Ed Sullivan show. Sitting in front of the television set, surrounded by my family, and watching those four guys appearing with their magical music, it seemed to me that a new musical religion had been born. Really, I can see it now. It was just like you see in movies and documentaires: a livingroom, the youngest kids sitting on the floor, the elder kids behind them. Sullivan announces them, and the younger kids start knodding their heads in appreciation, while at the same time the faces of the older kids started to show some kind of disgust. My dad even stood up to go and see if nothing was wrong with the television set. This, knowing that my family was very musical. In retrospect, I realized that my father was well aware there was nothing wrong with the TV: he realized these guys were so good, it would mean a shift in the music of the world. He was worried he and his generation would loose track of the teenagers and their music. He was right: big bands and Sinatra were loosing their influences, and music was becomming about other things than the older generation was used to. Luckily, my father came to appreciate the Beatles later on, mostly because of albums like Revolver. Me, I was sold right there and then: I was saving my money for Meet the Beatles and I just wanted to be a musician from then on”.
Most important book: Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger (1961):
"I was about twenty, and still reading books like Lord of the rings, when this book came into my life. I don’t mean to imply that Lord of the rings is a bad book, on the contrary; I still love to read science fiction books. But Franny and Zooey was the first litterary books I seriosly got in to. It is set in the 40’s, and it revolves around the Glass family. While growing up, the Glass children appear regurarly on a radio show, called The Wise Child, where they talk and discuss all sorts of adult subject matters. The kids appear to be very intelligent, even briljant, because the elder brothers are very smart and into the Zenn philosophy, which they pass on to the younger brothers and sisters. At a certain point in time, the eldest brother is more of a father figure than the father himself is. That is what touched me; this is how it used to be at home. I lost my dad at an early age, and my eldest brother was ten years older than I was. It was during Vietnam, 1969, and he was very engaged in the world and knew everything. A real intellectueel hippy, if you like. That is why I regconized myself in the Glass family, and why this book has stayed with me until now”.
