View Full Version : Something I am proud of, and very happy with!!
I recieved an email a few weeks ago.. I had written to a local newspaper, to ask them to publish something about Venice, since they will be performing in our local theater next thursday. I reconned they would write an article, and I would feel very proud they did what I asked them too.
But sometimes things don't turn out the way you expected them too...
In stead of writing it themselves, they asked me to do so. And, after some hesitation, I did.
It was published today, and I will put in on Photobucket, and link it trough. And translate it....
It's not often I am really proud of something I did, but I ám proud of this...

I discovered the Dutch text is also posted on their website, here: http://www.alphen.cc/pivot/entry.php?id=1508&w=uit#body
Let's see what it looks like in english:
Breaking down the house.
Heavenly voices, but with both feet firmly on the ground.
By Erna van der Graaf.
Our reader Erna van der Graaf is a big fan of the American band Venice. This band will be playing at Theater Castellum in Alphen next Thursday. Erna writes in Alphen CC to tell you how great Venice is.
Two sets of brothers and cousins, just bursting with talent. Born with music running trough their veins, raised with a microphone or guitar in their hands. This is Venice. They have been making music and singing together since their earliest childhood, each and every one of them In possession of a voice that crawls in trough your ears, and nestle in your heart in fantastic harmonies. Their style of music might fague-ly remind you of well known names like Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Eagles.
The Californian band Venice has the tools it needs to make this coming show one to never forget for those who will be attending. During the shows the members of the band know how to combine the old and new songs to make a fascinating and interesting evening.
Just ask the steady and steadily growing fan base in the Netherlands, the country where they are the best known. Or listen to their newest cd "Amsterdam", which was made using a technique called "live to tape" where the instruments and singing were recorded as it was performed in the Singel Church in Amsterdam.
The Edison they received for "Best Foreign Band" in 2003, beating such acts as U2 and Coldplay to the punch, shows the music world also realizes this is more than just another Family-band.
And the guys feel the need to keep in touch with their fans, and are willing to do a lot for it. People who send a post or email to one of their web sites shouldn't be surprised if a band member responses. To Venice this is just normal.
This band keeps on breaking down the house, but keeps both feet firmly on the ground. An almost Dutch mentality.

Nice job, Erna! A great article and photo! I know the band would really appreciate this - you should take a copy of the newspaper to the show and have them sign it at the meet and greet! ;)

Nice job, Erna! A great article and photo! I know the band would really appreciate this - you should take a copy of the newspaper to the show and have them sign it at the meet and greet! ;)
Best,
Cris T.
I have two copies ready, Cris. One for them to sign, so I can frame it and hang it on my walls. (Hey, wouldn't you? It's a once in a life-time thing I fear...) and one to give to them, with translation. I don't know if they will keep it, but I want them to see it anyway.
And all of you.. Thanks so much, you make me shy....

Of course they want to keep it!They wish they had more fans with such great initiatives
I wish it was my idea.
Don't be shy.

Great article Erna, well done!!!!!!
If that doesn't sell out the rest of the tour nothing will.
Great Erna!!! Thanks for sharing; although I live in Alphen, this is the only newspaper I don't receive...
I hope that the Castellum-theater will be sold out tonight (with lots of people willing to dance along the music played...) and if it is, it's thanks to you!!!:coool!:
Cu tonight!
Ahhh, I don't think this little article had much to do with how full the house was, though it was pretty full, wasn't it?
Sorry I didn't meet you, but I think I did see you. Were you the one who was taking pictures on the left side of the stage, at the front? I thought I saw a pretty sophisticated camera there..
To come full circle: I did join the line-up in the meet and greet, and did hand them the article. I even managed to tell them the story behind it, and that it was written by me. All of them immediatly warned me it had better be a good article, and asked if there was a translation available. When I said I had posted it here, they told me they would take a look.
So: "Hi guys!"
You were right Cris, they were pleasantly surprised, and really appreciated it. So I am glad I swallowed my shyness, and stepped over that threshold.
Now I have that article with autographs to hang on the wall. Just have to buy me a frame....
I did see you Erna, but your were too busy with other things and people, that I didn't want to interfere... And no, I wasn't the guy with the camera, I don't bring my camera to concerts anymore (I want to enjoy the music, not taking pictures like many other people do).
To be honest I thought the guy with the camera (yeah, I noticed him as well) was the professional photographer of the Alphen.CC who was taking pictures to accompany the review you are going to write ;)
Great to read that everybody was happy with the article and that you have it signed and ready to hang it on the wall at home!
Ah, what a shame! Next time just butt in.. I love to meet new people!

Thank you!
Maybe if you send the article to CentraleRedactie@destentor.wegener.nl
they will also give it a place in their newspaper.
The Stentor is the Newspaper of Zwolle.
Venice will be their 18 november so maybe?

Hey you fans,
Just read Erna's newspaper article. Erna, you did a good job!
Further I would like to mention that if anyone ever needs an English-Dutch or vice versa translation, you can always pull my string.
Translating to and from English is one of the things I do for a living (and for fun!).
And of course for this website or any other Venice purposes I would not want to be paid. Just say the word and I'll help you out.
All the best from Laura
