"Good evening secret people!!!"

That was the way Kipp greeted the audience at the crowded Stairway To Heaven in Utrecht last night.

It was a pretty cool show... The Lennons looking more relaxed than ever and having great fun... That is, after the first few songs... I had the impression that there were not only invited guests, but also a bunch of regular customers of The Stairway... People that didn't know the music of Venice and weren't interested. After the couple of slow songs at the beginning, Kipp said something like: "Thank you, especially to the people who were listening and not talking..."

Now I can live with the fact that there were people there who weren't interested in the music, but I can't understand why these people stayed in there seats, and therefore kept us fans from coming a bit closer to the stage, when there was space enough for them in the front (at the entrance)... They saw our irritated looks and that we wanted to get closer (I couldn't see a damn thing during a big part of the show, (like you can see on the pic). The people that I was behind had something like a company-party, so they were busier with eachother than with the music anyway... I even saw a few people asking them to find another spot in the café (better for them and better for us), but it didn't help... So that was a bit of a bummer... On the other hand; I had the luck to be at this special concert, it didn't cost me a dime so why complain? It was great fun to be there and witness this special occasion... :)

Funny moment: a guy in the audience yelled "I Swear!" during a break. Kipp laughed and told a story about "this guy in the USA, Matt, who does our website and has the only recording of us doing that song and keeps bugging us to play it... So he must have told ya! Ehhh, security: over here!" :)

Good review Rene! Didn't know you were there. I was close to the stage, so I had a good view. I was feeling sorry for all the people at the back of the place.

It was a great show!!!!!
I liked the acoustic feel to it and the fact that because of it, they played a lot of different songs.

My highlights:

- The fact that there was a very tall guy standing in front of Ilana and me and that he agreed to go stand a bit more behind us, so that we could see it better. And he did it. Wow, that's good manners!
- Pat doing Language of the Heart, his obvious nervousness about it and the fact that he sang it brilliantly. Almost made me cry.
- Great harmonica-work on Rivers never Run by Tollak Olestad.
- The fact that, although there were way too many tickets given away for such a small place like that, I had a chance again to see them in a smaller venue. Go small venues!!!!!!
- Go Pete!!!!!!! Pete played the guitar on I think two songs. And did a good job. Go Pete!!!!
- Somebody shouted 'I swear' very loudly to the guys in between songs and the band almost choked on it and decided to have him removed by security. Go Matt!
- Good jokes

Had to leave right after the show, so I didn't have a chance to stay too long afterwards.

I was very happy to be there. More secret shows!!!!!!!!

After Pat did his language, kipp told us that for al those years they are convinsing him to show everyone his beautiful warm voice and according to again the long applaus everybody loves it.
Also compliments for the rest of the band,it realy looks and souds

Yeah, it was really great last night!

Su, you forgot to mention there were 2 very tall guys standing in front of us. One moved but the other one didn't budge! (standing right in front of me :(

Had a great time anyway!

What makes great concerts for me is when everything just seem to come together. And that shows in how chatty the guys are in between songs, and how much they joke around:D

That's why I'm putting my job on the line right now, typing a transcript of everything that was being said. You all know how the songs sound, so you can 're-create' the concert with it!

It's a lot of work and a lot of text, so I will put it in a new thread.

Hey, Rene it has been a long time!
Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet:wave:

bye,
Ilana

> Hey, Rene it has been a long time!
> Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet

Damn... Guess I missed a great oppurtunity to meet my 2 special Venice-girls... :(

But I only found out yesterday afternoon at 4PM that I could go to the secret concert, so I was in kind of a rush...

Anyway: still love ya both! :o

Yeah, yeah, all talk!!!:D :o

I understand that you're shy, like quiet shy. Hopefully not to shy to come up to meet anyone?

:o Shy I understand. But once you start me talking (or typing...........)

Good evening all you secret people!
Tonight is definitely gonna be different, we’re gonna be mostly acoustic. We’re gonna be mostly doing songs we haven’t been doing at the other shows and just having some fun. Are you with us?
Rivers Never Run
This is pretty cool, to know that these are all the first people that bought the album.
You are the really crazy ones.
This is awesome
Mark: we’ve got time for a couple more, we want to thank you so much. We’ve got a big secret, we’re gonna do 3 songs.
Always
For a Dancer
I have to say this is so cool, that everybody is listening and NOT talking, that is so awesome. This is a special concert, we want everybody to sing together so thank you for not talking, thank you for not smoking.
Cool me Down
You guys sound good, that was great.
……
We have a guy in America, Matt Levitz he runs our website. He must have put someone up to it, because we have only done that song once, about 12 years ago and he’s got the only recording of it of the only time we’ve ever played it at a club. He’s always telling us that we have to do that song, I swear you have to do it again. I’m sure he told someone to yell it to us. Say hi to Matt for us.
M: security? Out! I SWEAR!!!
Landslide
Not down Anymore
So, are you enjoying the new album? YEAHHHHH.
That is the best thing we can hear when we ask that question. I don’t want to see, hmmmmm. You can lie, but you can tell the truth? Oh, there you go, there’s some honesty.
Mike: Security!!!
Mark: I SWEAR!
It’s a pretty amazing thing when you work so hard on so many songs. Then you finally make an album, and finally put it out there and you don’t really know what everyone is going to think. Then to get paid back with so much enthusiasm, and everybody singing back our words and feelings back to us, even with the new album. That is just the greatest gift that you can give us, so thank you so so so much!
Sweet Aloha
Singing: smile you’re on candid camera
Mark: we took a hot red fork, gave it to an old lady and gave her ice-cold cheesecake, let’s see what happens.
?
Kipp: didn’t we would be talking about Alan ? in this show.
This next song is the title track from the new album, it’s also the single from the new album.
Mark: It is huh? Why don’t you look at the setlist you little smurf!
Kipp: Okay.
Mark: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that You big Papa smurf
Kipp: Why don’t we change the title of the new album, is that cool with everybody?
Alright, save that intro, remember what I said and we’ll pick it up from there after this next song which is way better then that.
Mark: Whenever we make mistakes on stage the rest of the guys get to split their pay. So what’s a dollar divided by four?
Kipp: He just got a quarter, so….
Language of the heart
Big cheering!!!! Lots of sssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Afterwards a standing ovation!!! Lots of yelling and ‘ We want more”.
Kipp: Don’t clap too much! You know, he doesn’t want me to say anything everytime we do this song. He would rather, like, do the song and get it over with. Then I can say something if I want. But for 20 years, over 20 years, ever since he’s in the band with us, we have always known that he has a great voice. But he’s not the kind of person who wants to get up in front of everybody and sing a song that often. If ever! So we have always known. So finally when it came down to do this album, we begged to him and talked to him and we told him: we can always trow the tape away! No one has to hear it if you don’t like it! And we just begged him because we knew that people need to hear this fourth voice and who this person is. This other man’s voice that is in our band that belongs out there and we are so happy that people finally get to hear Pat sing (big cheer!).
Mark: Now he’s gonna sing all the rest of them!
Mike: Pat’s solo album comes out in January.
Mark: I’m gonna invest in that, it’s called Pat, Pat, Pat.
Mike: No, Pat, Pat and more Pat.
Kipp: Okay, remember that intro I was giving? Bla, bla, title of the album…… Okay? All caught up? It is the new single from the new album. We have it for sale here this evening. The cool thing about the single is, it’s not just the single from the album but also included is sort of an acoustic kind of recording we did of Tides, when we were here last summer. So you get something that isn’t actually on the album too.
Mike: In one take!
Mark: All done in one take, and is a real cool version of Tides! Yeah, so that’s on the single that’s available nowhere else! So now you HAVE to get the single.
Kipp: Anyway, it’s awesome that we could name our album this because that’s how we feel with the new record deal and everybody sticking with us. Everything is getting bigger and better so:
Welcome to the rest of your life
Kipp: So I’ll better stick with the setlist, huh? This was actually the last song that we added to the album, when we were picking all of our songs. Mark showed up with a demo that he had made with a friend in that guys studio. He said, you were so busy with finishing all the other songs that I went over to this guy’s house and recorded this song that I wrote and it’s called Blue Paint.
Mark: Heh, I wrote it!
Kipp: No, that’s what you said!
Mark: that’s what you thinked I said!
Kipp: Anyway, so he played us this new song and we went this should go on the album. Or something like that.
Blue Paint
Kipp: Now a song from the Garage Demos.
Charm You
Mark: Thank you, we made that one up!
Kipp: Here’s a song we haven’t done on any of the concerts during our tour. And it is from the new album. And it’s not Sultans of Swing! For those of you who were at that concert in Nijmegen that many years ago. We made a pretty good try of it though. We were in the middle of a crowded house in Nijmegen when someone in the audience yelled: Sultans of Swing! We had no idea why they said it and we had never done that song, but we gave it a good try!
Unbreakable Heart
Mark: Who wants Michael to play piano? Well, that’s about a third of you. Who wants Michael to play the piano? That’s about half of you. Who wants Michael to play the piano?
Kipp: Let me introduce the band, how’s that? (Michael tries to figure out how to work the piano).
Mark: I think we all know each other, Kipp.
Band introduction….
Kipp: Can we have Michael vocal check now?
Michael: Check 1,2,3……… he also sings very well but we will have none of that here (talking about Tolak)
Mark: Can you hear us on the monitor?
Michael: Yes I can, thank you Stuart.
Pat introduction…… big cheers!!!
Kipp: if he keeps this up we will have to put Pat’s face on the Euro………….
………band introduction.
Kipp introducing Michael, forgetting he’s at the keyboard, Mark steps in, pulls his hair up, pretending to be Michael.
Mark: I’m sorry Michael, please don’t tell Mam..
Desperado
Michael: Never played this piano, so bear with me.
SSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH – ing starts and Mark starts in, making flying movements.
Mark: Last call, the train is in the station.
Desperado starts again.
Big cheering.
Mark: let’s do that part again, where I do that part and you. Well let’s just start: You better let somebody love you………………….
……….
Kipp: Here’s a little treat that we had to learn for a special concert that we did the other night in ……….Zoetermeer………
Mark: O wait, you bit his head of, let me pick it up.
Kipp: Allright, this is a song we did in ZZZZOOOOOEETERMEEEEEEEEER. Where they were doing an all 70’s night and they asked us if we could do a couple…
Mark: ……we weren’t even born yet!
Kipp: but this is a definite sing along. You will all sound good and will cover up all of our mistakes and we’ll all have fun!
Mark: Sing loud!
Peaceful Easy Feeling
(at the end they sing ‘On the road to where you are’).
So today we got to do this other kind of secret concert thing, we’re there was a contest on the radio and whoever called in was told that we were going to do a special concert at their place of work. So guess who called in? A fireman! So today, for the first time in all the years that we’ve been together we did a concert in a fire station. It was really cool and really weird.
Mark: And all those fireman standing there, like mmmmm pretty cool.
Kipp: And then we lost half our audience when they received a call and they had to leave. Very, very weird.
Mark: Then they put Fireman’s hats on us and jackets and stuck us in a truck and we took pictures and it was really cool. And then Marty, who does our lights and is our tourmanager, him and me got fireman’s jackets so that was really cool.
Kipp: And then next time we will be pirates and then cowboys.
Mark: No, I think we dreamt that.
Kipp: Then we will be the Village People, that will be cool!
Think Again
We want to say that this has been awesome. Definitely one of the most special things we have ever done and got to be part of. To have all the first people who bought the album be invited and show up for this. This is a very different thing, very cool for us and we just have to say thank you very much!
Where are we going to be signing and saying hello?
Mark: Over there by the front door. We will go and relax for about 15 minutes and then we will be out there after the show. Go on and critic the show, say everything that I did wrong.
If I were you

We are going to dedicate this to all of you. All of the loyal friends of ours!
We’re still here

THE END

Maybe a bit of a touchy subject, especially after all that has been said about yesterdays show, but:

Aren't maybe the fans who are shhh-ing making more noise than the people who are shhh-ed at?

That was my feeling yesterday, and I think that the band might have thought so too: look at Ilana transcript where Mark compares the sound of the shhh-ing to a boarding train.

Anyway, just my thoughts, no to offend anyone.
More ideas?

Had 2 great nights in a row. Saw them in Tilburg wednesday and the secret concert last night. Took my brother in law the first night and my other brother in law last night. They didn't know Venice too well. They really loved it!!!
One thing I noticed in Utrecht that they only mentioned Venice Vibes as their web-site. Policy from Sony?

rene
10-18-2002, 11:34 AM
Huh? I didn't hear them mentioning nor Vibes nor Central... I only heared the thing about "this guy that does our website"... ;)

In fact I talked to "Merchandise Marius" about the fact that it was so cool that both Central ánd Vibes were on those new mousemats! I thought those were pretty cool, but Marius told me he had a hard time selling them... :( (I didn't buy one either, but I bought a WTTROYL kids-shirt for my little niece Daisy, who's 4 years old...)

O, yes!
That was a very great show last night!
We were standing on the balcony upon a table, so we had a very good view.
I've never had heard "Rivers never run" live before: great!
"Desperado" was awsome!
Mark sang it better than The Eagles ever did.
All in all, everything was perfect, to me. (did not hear the not-invited people).
After signing my cd, finally got kisses from Mark!
That keeps me wake up for driving home!

I hope the show in Nighttown would be as great as this one.
Can't hardly wait!

About the ones who ssshhhhet...
I was right at the place next to the bar, because I thought the new people should be at the front of the boy's.
So I stood behind.
Those people at the bar and behind the bar were realy anoying...
And maybe the ssshhh people let them even talk loauder but I stil think they should not let those people in..
The were only guests who came for a drink and had nothing to do with "invited guests".
They were only let in so the bar would make some money...
So the people from the bar did not do what they had prommised, namely, close the door after 9.15h.:(
That is what made me mad and sad because they smoked and I alwasy get sick (ill)
But for the boy's... They were GREAT!!

Marina

I wish they would have let us Venice fans in, instead of people who are not interested. They should have given away more tickets to the "real" fans...:(

Jeezzz. excuse me but aren't we being a bit childish??
We weren't there..
I wasn't there because I bought at the "wrong" shop...
(on purpose and twice :D)
Other peoples receipts weren't drawn out of all the people who sent in their receipt. :(
Who cares, think of the guys, they did their best... Sony made up a cool commercial stunt and all we do is complain about the people who drank a beer and made noise...
I think Venice had a good night..Everybody who went had a good night...
And the ones who didn't well.... Bad luck, maybe more luck next time...

Yeah, I agree.
I was there, but I wasn't really bothered by other people.
To tell you the truth: I never am.... People have to punch me in the nose before they stop me from having a good time...

I had a wonderful evening, so did the band.
So no bad words from me here!

High five....
Glad you understand..
I wasn't there... Because I refused to buy my CD at FRS..
I always buy my CD's at a tiny, little store near my house.. Good store and the owner loves Venice.. When I went to buy the CD for my adoptee in america. It was playing over the boxes in the store.. What more does a customer want..
He always orders anything I want and I would never by a CD anywhere else:)
So that;s the reason I had no chance to go to the secret concert.
But afterwards reading all those comments.. Jeezzzz.. just be happy you we're there:D!

Curlyblue you must be clairvoyant, knowing the text and setlist of a concert that will be given in 2003!!!!!!!! :o

Just teasing...it was great to read back the concert!
Enjoyed it all over again. I have missed the part about the Matt, must have been because of all those people in the bar talking too loud. I agree with everyone who found it disturbing. The first part of the show I was looking at a large pillar and hearing more of the conversations at the bar then of the music. Only when those uninterested-talking people at the table close to the stage left, I was able to see the boys and really enjoy the show.

As Cruyff used to say and probably still says: every disadvantage has its advantage....sponsors want privileges.

But...it was great to be there and take part in the party.
Next party....Geleen...I´ll ask the boys to sign the text!!!!
